Institute of Education, University of London

The Institute of Education, a graduate college of the University of London, is the largest institution in the UK devoted to the study of education and related aspects of social science and professional practice. The Institute is located at the heart of central London’s Bloomsbury district, close to museums, theatres, cinemas, clubs and shops.

Research degree programmes
Over 700 students – the largest research student community in the field – are undertaking studies at the Institute’s Doctoral School, where they are registered for either the long-established MPhil/PhD degree; one of two professional doctorates, the EdD and the DEdPsy; the MRes in Educational and Social Research; or the specialist MSc in Economics of Education. A new MSc programme in Evidence for Public Policy and Practice will be offered from 2007/08. The Institute also provides facilities for postdoctoral studies.

Master’s degree programmes
Master’s degree students enjoy small classes and access to inspirational tutorial staff. We offer the largest portfolio of postgraduate courses in
education and related areas in the UK: our 60 flexible modular master’s courses include programmes unique to the Institute, such as the MBA in Higher Education Management.

Teacher training
With more than a century of expertise, we remain true to our original purpose of training high-quality teachers.We are the highest-rated
initial teacher training provider in London, and every year over 1,200 graduates undertake one of our prestigious PGCE courses, offered
in partnership with over 500 local schools and colleges.

Facilities
The Institute’s Newsam Library, which is renowned for its comprehensive collections of current and historical materials, is the largest research resource in its field in Europe. The Institute offers specialist teaching facilities for art and design, drama and music, including studio space, darkrooms and 3D workshops. It also houses the Science Learning Centre London and the Earth Science Centre.

Accommodation
A number of intercollegiate halls of residence are within walking distance. The Institute also has a range of private accommodation available.

Student life
The Students’ Union is a lively social centre with facilities including a bar, cafeteria and shop. The nearby University of London Union offers a restaurant, bars, concert venue, gym and swimming pool. The Institute’s International Student Co-ordinator offers advice and assistance to all international students on a range of non-academic issues such as immigration and visas, healthcare, employment and living in London. Academic and pastoral support is also available from personal
tutors and the Students’ Union. Additional academic support includes access to an induction programme, study skills training and high-quality support in English for academic purposes.

Scholarships
A range of scholarships for international students is on offer at the Institute of Education, including awards available under the Institute’s Centenary
