Saakidhya Manohara Foundation Certificate in Business, Law and Social Sciences
Country of origin Sri Lanka
Sheffield International College helps you to adjust to a new lifestyle and gives you lots of support in every aspect of your life. This is important because the Foundation is academically challenging, and covers a vast syllabus. It has given me a good grounding and extensive knowledge in different subject areas, like economics and social sciences, which correspond with law.
The academic skills I have learnt – including even simple things like listening and efficient note-taking – have been so helpful. I feel motivated and ready to deal with my degree next year.
My Learning Support Tutor has helped me with life outside the College, and also with things like time management skills. Thanks to him I can make time for my work during the day and get a good night’s sleep! I am looking forward to starting the LLB degree at the University of Sheffield, as it is a new subject for me. I wanted a traditional English university, like Sheffield, which would be recognised around the world. I am proud of my work at the College and confident of my progression to the University.
I love the fact that everything is within walking distance in Sheffield. I have never even taken a bus yet! In my accommodation I made friends with people from all over the world. I have not yet been homesick, although I do miss my family sometimes.
Peter Chifulo Foundation Certificate in Business, Law and Social Sciences
Country of origin Zambia
Studying at Sheffield International College has taught me how to think critically and analytically. I have learnt how to incorporate other people’s theories into my own work.
The style of teaching here is very different to Zambia: the lecturers are approachable, they explain everything and there is room for questions. They even give after-class help. Now when I learn something it becomes a part of me – it is not just memorising facts. I can’t wait to progress to the University of Sheffield to study BA Economics and Business Management. I enjoy the academic element and challenge.
When I finish my degree I want to return to the company I have been working for in Zambia and work in the higher levels of management. I want to become a management consultant.
I would encourage students from other countries to come to Sheffield International College. You will have go to a world-class university and the fees are reasonable. Sheffield is a very nice place. I have found the College hospitable, memorable and generally lovely! When I leave it will be a sad time for me.
