The University of Hertfordshire (UH)Full Name: William Wong
Programme Title: MSc Computer Science
Country of Origin: Hong Kong
Age: N/A
Previous education:
BEng Aerospace Engineering, University of Hertfordshire, UK

Career History:
Having completed his undergraduate degree in Aerospace Engineering William Wong decided that to give him an edge in the increasingly competitive job market he should study at postgraduate level. He chose to study a Masters degree in Computer Science because of the School’s reputation in the field of research.

“I originally came to the University of Hertfordshire to do my undergraduate degree in Aerospace engineering because of its excellent reputation in that particular area. After I finished my undergraduate degree I felt I really wanted to gain a competitive edge in the job market so I thought I’d do a Masters. The Masters degree only takes one year full-time so I thought it was definitely worth doing before I returned to Hong Kong. I also enjoyed my time at the University so much I really wasn’t ready to return home!

Throughout my studies I lived in University on-campus accommodation which was good as it meant I didn’t have to walk far to get to lectures! You can literally get about 15 minutes before you have to be at a lecture and still make it there on time! I also met lots of friends from all over the world in University Halls- I still manage to keep in touch with some of them and will hopefully have a chance to meet up with them again some day.

During my studies I have to say that my lecturers were excellent- really inspiring, it makes all the difference as they keep you motivated and interested in the course. If you have any problems you can arrange to go and see them. If you miss a lecture or want to read ahead all the notes and stuff are available online through a system called StudyNet anyway so you don’t get behind.

The facilities are great as well. The Learning Resources Centre is open 24 hours so loads of people hang out there and when you’re really busy or near exams people even spend all night there! There’s a really good atmosphere though and it helps to get you through the hard times- studying can be hard work!

I’ve now moved back to Hong Kong and I’m working as a technical assistant at Rolls Royce. I was employed because my UK qualifications meant that I had the necessary communication skills to work in an international company- most of the people I work with are from the UK. I’m really enjoying the job- it’s a really great opportunity for me.
My time at the University of Hertfordshire was great- not only did I gain qualifications that enabled me to get a job in a prestigious international company I met loads of new people and had some really good experiences along the way. If I could do it all over again I definitely would!”
