BA Economics from Bilkent University in Ankara
Currently studying MSc Economics and Financial Economics 2005-06

After finishing my undergraduate degree, I already knew I had to do a Masters degree in order to be more qualified and satisfied with what I really want to do. The idea was to specialise in financial economics and I searched and talked to a lot of people about universities and programmes. I always wanted to study in England and postgraduate study was an excellent opportunity for me to turn it into reality.

I visited some education exhibitions in Turkey and met with really nice people who helped me a lot. I also checked the rankings of universities in the UK and e-mailed some of the professors to gather information about the programmes.

After a period of searching, I decided on applying to the University of Nottingham. The programme structure was appealing, the lecturers and professors were really good, the rankings were high and it had a really nice and well-organised campus. When I got my offer, I visited the University to speak to some people about the details of the programme and to see the campus for myself.

When I started the programme in September, I was a bit worried because I was not experienced in finance and had no idea of what type of difficulties this could cause. Luckily, I found that experience in finance was not crucial. The first semester was a bit more theoretical compared to the second semester and there were also some pre-sessional courses at the very beginning of the first semester to refresh memories.

Exam time was the most stressful period of my postgraduate study. As I was studying regularly and well prepared for each lecture, I did quite well in the exams and found that there was nothing to be worried about. What you should do to cope with the rigour of a Masters programme is to prepare for the lectures every week and do the extra readings in order to understand the topics better.

Besides the lectures and seminars, one of the wonderful things about being here is the opportunity to meet with people from different cultures from every single continent. It is a really interesting experience and gives you an idea about other cultures and living styles around you.

The city has a lot of students and there are many facilities for them. There are numerous cafés, bars, pubs and clubs and you can get student discounts in almost every shop! I admit, it is not the biggest city in the world, but you can find everything you need and want in Nottingham.

It has been a fantastic experience for me to be here for my postgraduate study and I am sure this degree will help me to build a better career in the financial sector. I am planning to go back to Turkey and find an appropriate job, but who knows, maybe I will end up coming back to England!
