The University of Reading is one of the UK’s older and larger universities. It is a cosmopolitan, residential university, with a strong emphasis on teaching and research. It was established by the University of Oxford in 1892, received its Royal Charter in 1926 and has a long history of welcoming students from around the world. In the current 2005/06 academic year, there are 17,518 students, of whom 2776 are international students from 153 countries.

The University offers exceptional sports opportunities, including a sports hall, fitness room, squash and tennis courts, many sports fields and a synthetic sports pitch. The Students’ Union has excellent facilities, including cafes, bars and a nightclub. The ‘3sixty’ building in the Students’ Union is already one of the premier venues in the south of England, attracting many top class bands, comedians and DJs. The Students’ Union sponsors more than 100 sporting, social, cultural and academic clubs and societies.
The University has its own Chaplaincy, multi-national Muslim Society with on-campus prayer rooms and links to the local Imam, and a Jewish Society.
