University of Reading

“We are one of the United Kingdom’s leading research-intensive universities, a major contributor to the knowledge economy, and internationally recognised for our excellence in teaching”

Overview
University of ReadingThe University of Reading is one of the UK’s older and larger universities.  It is a cosmopolitan, residential university, with a strong emphasis on teaching and research.  It was established by the University of Oxford in 1892, received its Royal Charter in 1926 and has a long history of welcoming students from around the world. In the current 2005/06 academic year, there are 17,518 students, of whom 2776 are international students from 153 countries.

Located in the southeast of England, Reading is 60 km west of London and 50 km south of Oxford.  Excellent for exploring the UK and Europe, Reading is less than 30 minutes from London by train, and London Heathrow Airport is 45 minutes by bus.  London Gatwick Airport is served by a direct train link with Reading.

Student Life
The University, with its beautifully landscaped campus of 300 acres, is literally on the borders of Reading town which is a large and thriving town in the heart of the UK’s ‘Silicon Valley’.

The University offers exceptional sports opportunities, including a sports hall, fitness room, squash and tennis courts, many sports fields and a synthetic sports pitch.  The Students’ Union has excellent facilities, including cafes, bars and a nightclub.  The ‘3sixty’ building in the Students’ Union is already one of the premier venues in the south of England, attracting many top class bands, comedians and DJs.  The Students’ Union sponsors more than 100 sporting, social, cultural and academic clubs and societies.

The University has its own Chaplaincy, multi-national Muslim Society with on-campus prayer rooms and links to the local Imam, and a Jewish Society.

The International and Study Abroad Office organises a comprehensive welcome programme to introduce new international students to the University, the town of Reading and the British way of life.  The University has an international student adviser, a medical and dental practice with in-patient facilities and a counselling service.

Accommodation
University hall accommodation is guaranteed, for their first year, to all new international students who meet their offer criteria and confirm their request for a hall place by July 30, prior to the start of the academic year in October.

Study Programmes
The University offers a wide range of programmes at foundation, undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral level.

It has particular strengths in a number of areas, including Archaeology, Law, Philosophy, Psychology, History and English, as well as International Management, International Securities, Investment & Banking, Construction and Land Management, Agricultural Sciences, Food Biosciences, TEFL and Meteorology. It offers a wide variety of courses in its four Faculties: Arts and Humanities; Economic and Social Sciences; Science; and Life Science.

Each student is allocated a supervisor or personal tutor to offer academic advice and support, and a study advisor is available for free study-skills assistance in the dedicated Study Advice Centre.

Free In-Sessional English language support is available to International fee paying students.

Teaching and Research Assessments
