The University of Sheffield
The University of Sheffield developed from the Sheffield School of Medicine (founded 1828), Firth College (1879) and the Sheffield Technical School (1884). In 1897 the three institutions joined to form the University College of Sheffield, which became the University of Sheffield by Royal Charter in 1905. Over the past century, the University has grown in reputation and size to become an institution of international standing. With more than 24,000 students, the University currently has over 3,300 international students from more than 115 countries.
Sheffield is big enough to have all the facilities of a major city, but small enough to be compact and friendly. It is the safest city in England, according to official UK government statistics. It is centrally situated, with good transport links to other major centres throughout the United Kingdom, and it is close to beautiful countryside. Sheffield has been rated as having one of the lowest costs of living by the Royal Bank of Scotland.
Academic strengths The University of Sheffield’s position as one of the UK’s leading research and teaching institutions is evident in the most recent Research Assessment Exercise, where 35 of the University’s subject areas are ranked in the top two grades, 5* and 5, an achievement exceeded by only five UK universities. The results also show that 81% of members of staff who were assessed are in 5* and 5 rated departments, compared with the national average of 55%. Annual income for pure and applied research is over £160m.
The University also maintains high standards in the delivery of undergraduate study programmes. In the latest Quality Assurance Agency Subject Reviews, we received 29 ‘Excellent’ ratings for our subjects of study, an achievement exceeded by only two other UK universities.
Facilities Support is available from the full-time International Students’ Officer in the Students’ Union and dedicated staff in the Department of Student Services. Numerous national, sporting and social societies all assist in making the Students’ Union one of the best in the UK. A housing service is available to all students throughout their stay at the University. Accommodation and Campus Services has trained staff experienced in dealing with student housing. Students at The University of Sheffield have access to one of the biggest university libraries in the country, with some 1.4 million items of stock and electronic services, and more than 2,200 study places. Key computing features include more than 1,000 computers.
Student life All students attending Sheffield are automatically members of the Students’ Union, the focal point of student life at the University. The Union funds more than 140 societies, reflecting the wide range of interests shared by students including theatre, dance, music, photography and creative writing. At night the Union building plays host to a variety of social activities such as live bands and an in-house cinema that has regular screenings of films throughout the year. Additional activities are organised by the International Students’ Officer, a current international student elected by international students to represent their interests. The highlights organised each year on campus include the international food evening and international cultural evenings.
The Union’s Student Advice Centre provides students at The University of Sheffield with information, advice and representation on all issues affecting them during their time at university.
‘The University has a worldwide reputation for quality, operating at the forefront of research and training.’
