Mukul Madahar PhD in Risk Management and End User Computing, University of Wales Institute, Cardiff Country of origin India
Study history An engineering graduate from India, Mukhul Madahar came to UWIC to take an MBA, then gained an MSc in Information Systems before embarking on a PhD in Risk Management and End User Computing. He is also now a member of the teaching staff at UWIC Business School.
I wanted to have a management qualification after doing my engineering bachelor’s. I assessed many options and, after meeting one of the representatives of UWIC at an education fair in India, I became convinced that UWIC would be the right choice. Right through my application process, to the point that I arrived in Cardiff, the response I had from the International Office was highly personalised. From the moment I arrived in Cardiff, I had a clear point of contact in the International Office, where the staff were always patient and answered any questions.
Home from home The whole ambience of the University was very student focused – not just the International Office but also the academic staff. The cultural and social programme organised by the International Office never let me feel that I was away from home. There were many visits organised to key places in the UK, which gave us the opportunity to find out more about the country and its culture. For me, the most enjoyable part was the annual cricket match between the Indian MBA students and the staff.
Modern learning culture All the teaching staff at UWIC have an open-door policy that makes things so much easier, especially for an international student. The MBA programme at UWIC is designed for individuals from different backgrounds. The staff were always there to answer my academic queries; I was not just a number to them.
UWIC, being a modern institute, follows a very modern approach towards teaching: the lectures and seminars are designed to allow the students to use their initiative and creativity, which is what I was expecting at a postgraduate level. One of the key aspects was the small group sizes, which resulted in a greater level of interaction between the tutor and the student.
Another excellent feature of the programme was the international study visit, which is organised totally by UWIC for the MBA students. This trip provided an excellent opportunity for the students to get to know each other better and make future contacts, while at the same time experiencing the culture of a new country. With the new specialist streams recently launched on the MBA, I would recommend this programme even more.
Conversion course and PhD When I completed my MBA, I had no hesitation in deciding to stay on at UWIC and pursue my studies. Coming from a non-IT background, I wanted to improve my technical expertise in this field. I therefore enrolled on the MSc in Information Systems, which can act as a conversion course. My experience on the MSc was very satisfying and I would highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to embark on a career in information systems.
I am currently pursuing my PhD from UWIC in the field of Risk Management and End User Computing. I am also involved with teaching within the business school, and as a result I am still involved in the cricket match between the MBA students and staff, only now I play for the other side – the staff team! In the long run, once I finish my PhD, I want to work in the field of business and information systems consultancy.
‘I am still involved in the cricket match between the MBA students and staff, only now I play for the other side – the staff team!’
